The British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) has done some very useful summarising of randomised controlled trial methodology (RCT) research which has been carried out and utilised by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to formulate their guidelines. The majority of the research suggests that counselling is as effective as CBT with some research suggesting that counselling is less costly than CBT. The research also shows that patients receiving counselling tend to be more satisfied with their treatment than patients receiving CBT or usual GP care.
